A new report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) highlights the alarming rise in workers affected by heat stress worldwide. As temperatures continue to soar due to climate change, more regions are experiencing dangerous heat levels that put workers' health and safety at risk. The report, Heat at Work: Implications for Safety and Health, emphasizes that heat stress is becoming a year-round issue, particularly in Africa, the Arab states, and Asia, where over 70% of the workforce is exposed to excessive heat.
Regions unaccustomed to extreme heat, like Europe and Central Asia, are seeing sharp increases in workplace injuries and heat exposure. The report warns that without proper health and safety measures, heat stress could result in billions of dollars in lost income and medical expenses, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The ILO calls for urgent action, including heat safety legislation and global collaboration, to protect workers from the growing threat of heat stress.
